Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Itamar Zerem ("we", "us", or "our") manages information in the Siddur Hayom app, on both Android and iPhone. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it.

Our guiding principle is simple: the app exists to serve you day to day, not to collect information about you. Most of what the app does — zmanim, the Hebrew calendar, the siddur and the library — is computed and stored on your device alone.

2. Information We Collect

Account details (optional): An account is required in two cases: if you choose to contribute to the synagogue and minyan database, and if you want your data to move between devices. If you register with an email and password, we store your email address and an encrypted password through Firebase Authentication. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive only your email address and display name from them. Every other part of the app works without an account.

User profile: A display name, optionally.

Sync between devices: If you are signed in to an account, the app keeps a copy of your preferences under that account, so you find them on every device where you sign in. What is stored: study markings and progress, the Shabbat and holiday preparation lists, minyan alerts, bookmarks, pinned studies, favorite synagogues and app settings. It is stored in Firebase Cloud Firestore, in a document keyed to your account ID. Without an account none of this leaves your device, and deleting your account deletes this document too. What is stored are the preferences themselves — not the content of your prayers, books or searches.

User-generated content: Synagogues, prayer times and correction reports you add to the database, including any photos you attach. This information is shown to all users of the app, so please do not include personal details in it.

Support requests: When you send us a message from within the app, we store the message text, your name and email address if you provided them, up to three attached photos, your platform (Android or iPhone), the app version, and your device's notification token — so that we can reply to you personally. The conversation is kept so that you can see it under "My Requests".

Location data: The app requests location access in order to compute zmanim for where you are, and to show synagogues near you. The computation itself happens on your device, and we do not store your location on our servers. However, in order to translate coordinates into a place name and to display a map, those coordinates are sent to the OpenStreetMap mapping service. You can decline the location permission and choose a city manually instead.

Usage data (analytics): In order to know what to improve and what to add, we collect statistical data about how the app is used: which screens were opened and when, how long a session lasted, and which of a few key actions were taken — opening a prayer, opening a book, searching for a minyan, downloading a parasha, adding an alarm, saving a bookmark and marking a study portion as learned. For some of those actions the name of the item is recorded too, for example the name of the prayer or of the book. Collection is done through Google Analytics for Firebase, which attaches to the data a random installation identifier, the device model, the operating-system version, the app version, the device language, and the country and city derived from your IP address. The data is not linked to your account and does not identify you personally, and it does not include the content of your prayers, study, searches or support requests.

Your choice about analytics: On a device whose region is set to a country in the European Union, the EEA or the United Kingdom, the app asks you about this once, on first launch, and collects nothing until you answer. Everywhere else collection is on by default. Anywhere in the world you can turn it off, or back on, at any time — in Settings, under "Help us improve".

What we do not collect: We do not collect an advertising identifier, we do not track you across other apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising and no automatic crash reporting. We do not sell your information and we do not share it with advertisers.

3. Notifications

Most notifications in the app — zmanim, reminders, daily study and alarms — are scheduled and delivered on your device, with no server involved and without our knowing about them. Notifications sent by us, such as a reply to your support request or a general announcement, go through Firebase Cloud Messaging and require your device's notification token. You can revoke the permission at any time in your device settings.

4. Third-Party Services

The app relies on the following services, each with its own privacy policy:

• Google Firebase — user authentication, the synagogue and support-request database, syncing your preferences between your devices, notification delivery, and statistical usage data (Google Analytics for Firebase).
• Google and Apple — only if you chose to sign in with them.
• Cloudinary — hosting for photos attached to support requests and synagogues.
• Telegram — support requests and our replies are relayed to us through a private Telegram bot, so that we can respond quickly.
• OpenStreetMap — translating coordinates into place names, address search and map display.
• Sefaria — fetching texts and commentaries in the library and in study mode.
• shas.org — displaying the classic Talmud page layout.

The text and map services receive only what the request itself requires — for example a book and page reference, or a set of coordinates — and not your identity.

When you choose to navigate to a synagogue, the app opens the navigation app on your device (Google Maps or Waze) with the destination. From that point on, that app's privacy policy applies to you.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

We keep your account data for as long as the account is active. You have the right to delete your account and all information associated with it at any time, using the "Delete Account" button in the app's profile settings.

Content you contributed to the synagogue database is meant to serve all users, and may therefore remain in the database after your account is deleted, no longer linked to you.

A photo you uploaded is stored with our image-hosting provider. Removing the photo from within the app removes it from display, but the copy held by the provider is not deleted automatically. If you would like a photo deleted entirely, please contact us and we will do so.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to know what information about you we hold, to review it, to request its correction and to request its deletion. Most of these actions are available directly in the app; for anything else, please contact us and we will handle your request promptly.

7. Children's Privacy

The app is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we update this policy, we will also update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page.
